There is a drawer in Lærke Bagger's studio that most knitters would call a problem. Hundreds of yarn ends — some barely a metre long — sorted by nothing at all. She calls it the starting point.

"People ask me how I choose colours," she says, pulling out a handful. "I don't. I take what's on top. If it looks wrong, that's usually the good part."

Scraps first

Bagger's method starts where most patterns end: with leftovers. A sweater might contain forty yarns from twenty projects, knotted together on the right side so the joins show. The knots aren't hidden because they aren't mistakes.

It's a quiet argument against the idea that knitting is about control. Her work reads more like a diary — this stripe from a friend's stash, that bead from a broken necklace.

"If it looks wrong, that's usually the good part."

Gauge is a suggestion

Ask her about swatching and you get a shrug. "I swatch when the fit matters. A fitted cardigan, yes. A scarf? The scarf will be whatever it wants to be." The point isn't to skip the craft — she can read a chart faster than most people read a menu — it's to know which rules are load-bearing.

For beginners she has one instruction: finish something ugly. "Your first sweater should be a bit wrong. Then it's yours. If it's perfect, it's the pattern's."

Making it your own

Before we leave, she shows us a work in progress: a child's sweater with a sleeve in fourteen pinks. Somewhere mid-row, a bead. "That one's from my daughter. She put it there while I wasn't looking."

She knits on without taking it out.
